Motability Scheme at KGM: Your Guide to Accessible Driving

Are you wondering, “What is the Motability Scheme?” or “How does Motability work?” You’re in the right place. At KGM, we’re proud to support the Motability scheme, a UK government-backed programme that enables people with disabilities to exchange their Motability allowance to lease a brand-new car, scooter, powered wheelchair, or wheelchair-accessible vehicle.

What is the Motability Scheme?

The Motability Scheme helps disabled people stay mobile by offering affordable access to vehicles that suit their lifestyle and mobility needs. Instead of purchasing a car outright, eligible users can exchange their mobility allowance to lease a vehicle.

Once you’ve selected an eligible KGM vehicle, your allowance is automatically used to cover the lease cost (or partially, if you choose a lower-cost option). Typically, a Motability vehicle is leased for three years and then returned at the end of the lease, and you choose a new one if you still qualify.

What's Included in a Motability Lease with KGM?

When you lease a Motability vehicle through KGM, you get a comprehensive package that includes:

  • A brand-new KGM every 3 or 5 years
  • Insurance for up to 3 drivers
  • Road tax
  • Servicing and maintenance
  • Full breakdown cover
  • Mileage allowance (up to 60,000 miles over a 3-year lease or 100,000 miles over a 5-year lease. Mileage over this will be charged at 5p per mile.)
  • Tyre and windscreen Repair/Replacement
  • Standard home chargepoint installation for electric vehicles (EV)

Who is Eligible for the Motability Scheme?

To be eligible for the Motability scheme and lease a new KGM vehicle, you must receive one of the following Motability allowances:

  • Higher Rate Mobility Component of the Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
  • Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
  • Higher Rate Mobility Component of Child Disability Payment (CDP)
  • Enhanced Rate of Mobility Part for Adult Disability Payment (ADP)
  • War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS)
  • Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP)

How to Apply for a Motability Vehicle at KGM?

Once you’ve confirmed your eligibility, you can apply in one of two ways:

  1. Online: Create a Motability Scheme account at motability.co.uk
  2. In-person: Visit your local KGM dealership, where our team will guide you through the process

To complete your application, you’ll need:

  • Your UK passport or driving licence. You don’t have to have a driving licence to apply for a Motability car, as you can choose up to three named drivers to drive the vehicle on your behalf.
  • Your National Insurance number
  • Details of the drivers you’d like to include on the insurance
  • Ensure that you have at least 12 months left on your benefit

If you’re unsure about your eligibility or need help getting started, visit Motability or call 0300 456 4566. You can also contact KGM directly for personalised support.

Paying for a Car Using the Motability Scheme

You’ll exchange your qualifying mobility allowance to cover the cost of leasing the brand-new vehicle, and this payment will occur every four weeks directly from your benefits. This happens automatically, with Motability receiving the payment directly from the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) or Veterans UK. All you’ll have to pay for is your own fuel.

As of 2026/27, the weekly Motability allowance rates are:

  • Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA): £80 per week
  • Higher Rate Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP): £80 per week
  • Higher Rate Mobility Component of Child Disability Payment (CDP): £80 per week
  • Enhanced Rate of Mobility Part for Adult Disability Payment (ADP): £80 per week
  • War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS): £89.25 per week
  • Higher Rate Mobility Component of Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP): £80 per week

There are cars available with no advance payment, meaning your allowance fully covers the lease. If you choose a car that costs more than your allowance covers, you will pay an Advance Payment. This advance payment covers the cost between your Mobility allowance and the total cost of your lease, and is made as a one-off, non-refundable fee.

If you need financial support to make an Advance Payment, the Motability Foundation can help.

Adaptations on the Motability Scheme

Adaptations can be made to vehicles in the Motability car scheme to make them easier and more comfortable to use. They’re split into 3 types:

  • Adaptations to help you drive
  • Adaptations to help you get in and out of the car
  • Adaptations to help you store equipment

If you’re not sure which adaptation you need, you can speak to an adaptations installer or contact the Motability Scheme directly, who can arrange a Driving Mobility assessment. Find an adaptations installer near you at https://findadealer.motability.co.uk/adaptations.

Many adaptations are available at no extra cost when fitted at the start of your lease. However, more complex or larger adaptations may incur an additional charge. If you wish to add adaptations during your lease, you’ll need to discuss this directly with the Motability Scheme to ensure compatibility and cost. If you're unable to afford essential adaptations, the Motability Foundation may be able to offer financial support to help cover the cost.
