Musso EV at the MythBusters EV Rally 2026: four myths tested

Five days, six electric support vehicles and one question that follows every electric pick-up around: can it do the job? Between 7th and 11th September, KGM Motors UK supplied four all-new Musso EV pick-ups and two Torres EVX SUVs as Official Vehicle Partner of the GREENFLEET MythBusters EV Rally 2026. The fully branded fleet carried Rally personnel and crew along the roughly 1,000-mile route, which started in Exeter and finished at the EVerything Electric Greater London show at Allianz Stadium, Twickenham.

The rally exists to put electric vehicles through real-world driving and challenge the assumptions around them. For anyone running a fleet, those assumptions tend to sit on the same few lines of the spreadsheet. Purchase price, tax, range and whether the vehicle still carries and tows what the business needs.

Here's how the Musso EV answered each one.

What is the EV Rally 2026?

The EV Rally is GREENFLEET's electric vehicle rally series, backed this year by Lex Autolease, and its strapline sums up the idea: the real-world demonstration of e-mobility. Teams drive set stages between checkpoints, stopping at depots, charging hubs and industry sites to see how electric vehicles and charging infrastructure perform in everyday use.

This year there were two routes. One for cars and vans (city cars included) and one for trucks. GREENFLEET billed 2026 as the Year of the eHGV, and its Trucks + Trailers element put electric heavy goods vehicles (eHGVs) on the road, with stops at charging hubs built specifically for them.

Myth 1: electric pick-ups cost more

Price is usually the first objection. The Musso EV is the UK's most affordable electric pick-up, at £39,995 including VAT with the £5,000 Plug-in Van Grant applied.

Speaking to GREENFLEET during the rally, Clive Messenger, Sales Director at KGM UK, explained the thinking behind that figure: "When we decided to bring the Musso EV into the market, it was very important to us to make it the same price as our award-winning combustion-engine diesel Musso range, so the customer can decide what powertrain is right for them depending on their own circumstances."

For a fleet, that simplifies things. The choice between electric and diesel comes down to duty cycle and charging access. The list price stays the same either way.

Myth 2: the tax saving is marginal

It's anything but. The Musso EV carries the UK's lowest Benefit-in-Kind (BiK) charge of any commercial vehicle, from £30 per month in 2026-27 for a 20% taxpayer.

"That's less than a pound a day!" Messenger said. Double-cab pick-ups have seen significant changes to personal taxation, and the electric version arrives right in the middle of that shift. Roughly £360 a year in BiK makes a pick-up a much easier company vehicle to offer drivers, and a practical way to move a working fleet towards electric.

Myth 3: the range won't last a working day

Rally support is a busy brief. Crews run ahead of and alongside the field, stop, start and need the vehicle ready whenever the schedule moves. Messenger quotes a range of 240 miles plus, with up to 290 miles available in city driving.

Colin Boyton, Event Manager at GREENFLEET and The EV Rally Series, drove the Musso EV during the event. "It does exactly what you need it to do," he said. "It feels capable, responsive when required, and the range has been very reassuring. This is the first electric pick-up I have driven, and it not only looks the part, but delivers a strong, confident drive too."

He rated the regenerative braking as well. As someone who enjoys one-pedal driving, he found it "smooth, intuitive and easy to use."

Myth 4: electric means giving up capability

This is where pick-up buyers push hardest, so here are the numbers. A 690kg payload. A 2.3-tonne towing capacity. Full-time all-wheel drive.

"It does everything you need," Messenger said, adding that "people can be confident in it."

Driver comfort got a good report too. Boyton described the cabin as "extremely comfortable, with plenty of space," which counts for a lot when the same driver is behind the wheel all day.

Where the Torres EVX fits in

The two Torres EVX SUVs worked alongside the pick-ups, moving Rally personnel and crew between stages. The Torres EVX offers up to 287 miles of WLTP range from a 73.4kWh battery, a 1.5-tonne towing capacity and up to 1,662 litres of load space. If a role calls for an electric SUV rather than a pick-up, it's the one to look at.

What the EV Rally 2026 showed

The rally wrapped up at Everything Electric in Twickenham on 11 September, where exhibitors and test drives gave visitors a hands-on look at the latest electric vehicles.

Kevin Griffin, Managing Director at KGM Motors UK, called the event "a brilliant opportunity to demonstrate how electric vehicles perform in real-world conditions, particularly for drivers and businesses who need capability without compromising on everyday usability."

Messenger says interest in the Musso EV is coming from National Fleet and SME operators, and from private and lifestyle customers as well. "The Musso EV ticks a lot of boxes, and it is a real opportunity for a wide range of users."

Next up: EV Rally Cymru

The series heads to Wales next. EV Rally Cymru runs on 21st and 22nd October 2026, supported by Transport for Wales and the Welsh Government.
